SHRM Advocates Keeping Optional Practical Training

President Donald Trump may soon issue an executive order that could restrict or rescind the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, which provides temporary employment directly related to a foreign student’s major area of study in the U.S. SHRM encourages the Trump administration and Congress not to scale back this vital program, especially as the economy works toward recovery.

SHRM President and Chief Executive Officer Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, sent a letter on May 28 to the administration urging support of the OPT program. SHRM also sent a letter to lawmakers on Capitol Hill with the below infographic highlighting the importance of the OPT program for the world of work.

SHRM’s message to the administration and to Congress is clear: Now is not the time to STEM the flow of TALENT.
