On May 15, the House of Representatives passed by a vote of 208 to 199, a more than $3 trillion opening bid for the next coronavirus (COVID-19) stimulus package entitled “Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions Act” (HEROES Act). The bill contains several employer provisions including an expansion of the Paycheck Protection Program, Unemployment Insurance benefits and temporary changes to paid family, medical and sick leave among other issues of interest to SHRM members.
The bill will now go to the Senate chamber for consideration, where is it not expected to pass in its current form. Negotiations will be ongoing to develop a final proposal to garner support from all parties, the Democratic-controlled House, Republican-controlled Senate and the Administration.
SHRM will continue to advocate on provisions impacting work, workers and the workplace and will provide an update when a final deal on the HEROES Act is reached.
